01A railway in motion

Less than a mile.
A living railway.

The railway is part of the Dockyard visitors can still see, hear and meet.

At its height, around 17 miles of standard-gauge track served the Naval Dockyard. Today, just under a mile remains in use. A volunteer team operates demonstration trains and cares for the locomotives, wagons, cranes and track.

02After the Navy · before CHDR

A railway
between eras.

The story did not stop when the Naval Dockyard closed.

On 30 March 1984, the Royal Dockyard closed. The railway entered a different chapter: the site became a visitor attraction, its railway machinery and track took on new lives, and the people who cared about them began shaping a future beyond naval service.

CHDR took shape as a volunteer railway group around 2008. The years between closure and that new beginning deserve their own history, alongside the Navy-era registers and today’s fleet.
